A New Marriage Proposal By REBECCA WINTERS

The whole essay is base on one question: how active a role government should play in fostering marriage is a matter of debate.

Advantages of Government intervention in family relationships:
1. Benefit the children in the family as research have proven that children in a stable family have better moral standards.
2. Stability in the family will lead to more stable and healthy society as family are the fundamental building bricks of the society.
3. Relationship problems on people are better solved through government organisation (non-profitable organisation like Community Services for Children.
4. Citizens will feel the care from their government.

Disadvantages of government intervention in family relationships:
1. Resources are channelled from other sectors to this organisation, this may lead to not so efficient use of the capital and resources.
2. Some couples want to divorce due to personal choice or family problems like abuse;violent; religions and etc.
3. Some of the government measures: The National Organization for Women's Legal Defence and Education Fund, recently renamed Legal Momentum, charged that the course Sims and Bryant attended specifically emphasized job services for men but mentioned nothing about finding work for mothers.

Overall, I think government should involve in marriage management, however the condition should be: both parties are willing; no family problem like abuse; not to give extensive care; children must be considered.

  1. Re-post by Xin Fang:
I agree with Jie Ming's point that government should be involved in marriage management provided that both parties are willing, no family problem such as abuse, not to give extensive care and the child must be considered. Government should intervene as long as it benefits the society as a whole and yet, not invade the privacy of individuals.

However, there are also limitations to some of these government intervention on marriage management. For example, the 5-days work week. It was implemented to allow working parents to spend their time with families during the weekends so as to maintain or improve on family relationship. However, some career-minded parents might not follow such policies and still insist on working during the weekends. Hence, in this case, government intervention will not work
